As per the Department of Home Affairs, Government of Australia, the proficiency levels are designated, based on the score, as Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior. The scores from PTE – Academic and TOEFL have to be benchmarked against IETS scores to get equivalence.

Most English speaking countries require prospective students or migrants to that country to have a specified minimum understanding of the English language. This understanding is mostly evaluated through their listening ,reading, writing, and speaking skills.

These skills are tested through various English Language Proficiency Tests (ELP).

The most popular and widely accepted amongst these tests are:

  • Pearson’s Test of English: (PTE)
  • International English Language Testing systems: (IELTS)
  • Test of English as Foreign Language: (TOEFL)
  • C1 Advanced (Formerly Known as Cambridge Advanced English – CAE)
  • Occupational English Test (OET) for Health Care Professionals.

PTE Academic is the world’s foremost computer based test of English for study abroad and immigration. The results are usually declared within five days.

PTE Academic test is accepted by all Australian Universities. In Australia, there are around 310 institutes that accept PTE Academic test results. In New Zealand all universities accept the PTE Academic Test results. Overall around 70 institutes in New Zealand accept PTE Academic test results. In addition to this the test results are also accepted by Governments of Australia and New Zealand for the purpose of immigration.

Preparation: The best way to prepare for the test is to join a coaching class and get face to face training. There is also an official offline practice test which can be downloaded. Pearson’s also have official text books like ‘The Official Guide to PTE Academic or ‘Practice Test Plus’, which will help the test giver in preparation.

The tests can be taken 360 days in a year. You can share the results with unlimited number of institutions at no additional costs. The markings are 100% computer based thus ensuring impartiality and accuracy.

IELTS assesses the English language proficiency of people who want to study or migrate to countries where English is primary language for communication. The results are available after 13 days.

There are two types of IELTS test: a) IELTS Academic and b) IELTS General. IELTS Academic is taken for study level of undergraduate and above. This test is also taken for the purpose of Professional Registration. IELTS General is taken for migrating to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the UK.

All Australian & New Zealand Universities accept the IELTS test results. In Australia there are nearly 953 institutes which accept IELTS results. In New Zealand nearly 144 institutes and organizations accept IETLS results.

Preparation: As mentioned elsewhere, joining a class to receive face to face instruction is the best option. This can be supplemented by practicing with sample test questions. IELTS also has its official publications like - Vol. 1 Official IELTS Practice Materials (with CD). Vol. 2 Official IELTS Practice Materials (with DVD).

A test taker can also see the results online for 28 days after the results are declared. IELTS has also added a new feature where the test taker is explained about the scores and will also able to see tips on improving the score in each band.

This test is conducted on 48 days in a year. The test taker can nominate five institutes to which test results have to be sent at no additional cost.

TOEFL has two types of tests: 1) TOEFL Internet Based Test (IBT) and TOEFL Paper Delivered Testing. TOE earlier had TOFEL Paper Based Test (PBT). This test is not administered any longer. The TOEFL Paper Delivered Testing was introduced in October 2017 and is more aligned to TOEFL IBT.

TOEFL IBT: This test evaluates the test takers proficiency of understanding & using English Language at university level. Thirty nine Universities and forty five institutions accept TOEFL test results.

Preparation: The best way to prepare for TOEFL is joining a class to take face to face training. TOEFL also has practice materials including free sample questions, practice tests, interactive skill building programs, and detailed tips and information for understanding more about the test.

TOEFL tests are administered more than 50 times in a year. Test results are declared ten days after the test is taken. Test takers can nominate up to four institutions to receive the scores with no additional costs.

C1 Advanced (Formerly Known as Cambridge Advanced English – CAE)

C1 Advanced, formerly known as Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), is one of the Cambridge English Qualifications. Its evaluates the test takers ability of using English language skills that universities are looking for.

C1 Advanced is accepted by all Universities in Australia & New Zealand. In Australia around 67 institutes accept the results of C1 Advanced and in New Zealand the number of institutes accepting the results of this test is around 22.

Preparation: Cambridge offers free paper based and computer based sample tests for preparation. The test taker can also download PDFs like ‘Reading and Use of English answer key’ and ‘Listening answer key’

The test is administered on 22 dates of the year (Paper Based) and on 16 dates (Computer Based). The results are declared 4 – 6 weeks after the test has been taken.

Institutions can check the scores online if the test takers send the Candidate's ID and Candidate's Secret Number.

OET is an International English language test that evaluates English language skills of health care workers, who want to register and practice in an English speaking country.

This test is developed health care professionals in the following fields: Dentistry, Dietetics, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiography, Speech Pathology and Veterinary Science.

Thirty one universities and Institutes accept OET results. In New Zealand the number is around seven.
