What is the difference between a Job and a Career

What is the difference between a Job and a Career?

The Difference between a Career and a Job.: A job is something you do simply to earn money; a career is a series of connected employment opportunities. A job has minimal impact on your future work life, while a career provides experience and learning to fuel your future.

A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.

The best career advice given to the young is: Find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it.

To find a career to which you are adapted by nature, and then to work hard at it, is about as near to a formula for success and happiness as the world provides. One of the fortunate aspects of this formula is that, right career has been found, the hard work takes care of itself. Then hard work is not hard work at all.

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

Do we in India actually do any career planning which would reflect the definitions given above?

Do we do what at the most can be termed as education planning?

Do we link education planning to securing a career or just acquiring a Degree?

Do we embark on a journey without knowing the destination?

The answer to all these questions can be achieved when you think what you really want to become and what you have to do to reach that goal!

The answer to this question can be given by our counselors who have planned careers to some of the well established students who are currently successful in their careers in overseas destination.

Definition of CAREER:

'An occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress ‘

‘the job or series of jobs that you do during your working life, especially if you continue to get better jobs and earn more money’

‘A field for or pursuit of consecutive progressive achievement especially in public, professional, or business life ‘

‘An occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress’

What is the right time for career planning?

Is it after 10th Standard? 12th Standard or is it to be done after doing Masters?

After 10th class we choose whether to pursue Arts, Commerce or Science. After 12th standard, students opt for undergraduate degrees in various streams like Arts, Science, Commerce etc.

Is this career planning? At the most is it education planning?  We need to plan for a Career (as defined in section above) and not just for a degree.

A student need to understand what is his area of interest and then match it with the current demand skills in the developed world. The skill which pays more in India does not pay more in developed country. The job which is available in Developed country will not be available in developing country. So we need to see how interest is resolved from the career we choose.
